About Protocol2 Air Sciences

Protocol2 Air Sciences Inc. is a dynamic company formed by expert professionals. We are dedicated to providing accurate, reliable, and high quality air emission testing and related services. We are committed to delivering our professional services through the belief that your requirements are of utmost importance.

Company History
Protocol2 Air Sciences Inc. was incorporated in March 2003 by Kevin Smith and Lawrence Reininger. Kevin and Lawrence each had 13 years of previous experience in the Air Emission Testing field when they decided to take a chance and start their own company. They felt that they could provide a superior service through a new company based on their experience and work ethic. After completing their market research and a business plan, they met with a few banks to try and secure a business loan. It took three meetings at three different banks but they were finally successful. It was not a large loan so they had to take additional personal guarantee loans from family and friends to make up the shortfall of funds needed to purchase the required equipment. Analyzers and sampling equipment is very specialized as well as very expensive. Enough money was secured to purchase the equipment (a mix of new and old). They were able to put together enough sampling equipment and their first CEM instrumentation trailer to begin testing. The company operated from Kevin’s house for the first 3 years, the garage and part of the house was full of sampling equipment and work benches. Of course the CEM cube van took up the whole front driveway. Both Lawrence and Kevin had offices at their residences as well. The first operating year was pretty lean and did not generate the revenue that was anticipated. Payroll, something we all love and depend on had to be sacrificed for now. Year two proved to be much more successful and payroll was finally implemented at Protocol2, although it was a pretty small expense to the company. During the 3rd year of operations the company grew again and Protocol2 was now in a position to hire their first two employees in the spring of 2005. The company grew again during 2005 and it was decided at that time that they would now be able to move their operations to a small lease facility with a few offices and a work bay. Since that move Protocol2 has been able to consistently grow as a company. We are proud to say that we are now able to employ 10 professionals in an 11,000 ft2 lease space. We have 3 complete Instrumental Analyzer CEM units and all support equipment and specialized Manual sampling equipment that allows us to complete any type of project, no matter how big or small.

It has been a challenging but rewarding road we have followed. Protocol2 has seen many changes over the years but one thing has always and will always remain the same, we are committed to providing our professional services to the highest standards in the industry and we will always stand behind our work, ensuring that we meet the goals and needs of our clients.

  • Kevin Smith President- Kevin Smith has over 28 years of experience in air monitoring, source emission testing, efficiency evaluations of pollution abatement systems, combustion/destruction removal efficiency studies, as well as Relative Accuracy Test Audits (RATA), Cylinder Gas Audits (CGA) and development of Quality Assurance Plans for facilities utilizing continuous emission monitoring systems. He has extensive experience in conducting isokinetic, proportional, instrumental and composite sampling methods as specified by all provincial and federal regulatory agencies throughout Canada, the United States, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and Argentina. He has gained this experience from tests conducted at pulp and paper mills, oil and gas refineries, power & utility plants, hazardous waste incinerators, mining operations and various industrialized production facilities. Kevin’s background in source emission sampling includes both organic and inorganic target pollutants. Kevin has been responsible for the project management and on site field sampling of over 2500 air emission projects. Various industrial corporations have also retained Kevin for training on both theoretical air issues, hands on sampling methodologies and regulatory reporting requirements in the air monitoring field.
  • Lawrence Reininger Vice President- Lawrence Reininger has over 28 years of diverse industrial/environmental experience in projects and studies ranging from air pollution assessment and control to project management of environmental air monitoring programs, specializing in Continuous Emissions Monitoring. His background consists of source emissions evaluation and assessment; evaluation of air pollution control systems; air quality monitoring (source testing and ambient air); testing and certification of industrial process analysers; and data management and reporting. His industrial background includes process evaluations (DRE, performance testing, compliance testing, DLN Tuning) in industries such as oil & gas, utilities, sour gas plants, pulp and paper mills, steel mills; municipal, industrial, medical and hazardous waste incinerators; cement kilns, the plastics industry, automotive, and pilot plant projects. He adheres to strict quality assurance and quality control programs and the latest provincial and federal environmental regulations pertaining to the release of airborne emissions.
  • Mike Pettigrew Project Supervisor - Mike Pettigrew has been with Protocol2 for over 13 years and brings over 24 years of environmental background to the company all directly related to the air quality field. Mike has gained experience in various projects ranging from compliance emission testing to destruction / removal efficiency tests. His background consists of source emission sampling, process / process loss sampling, report preparation, method development and client liaison. Mike’s experience at the technical level have given him the skills in the areas of field operations, quality assurance/quality control, equipment calibration & maintenance, technical bid preparation and onsite client consulting/troubleshooting. Mike has wide-ranging experience in sampling for both organic and inorganic target parameters. He has also been involved in various destruction / removal efficiency projects as well as pollution abatement performance tests throughout Canada and Internationally. Mike has also carried out numerous relative accuracy test audits utilizing continuous emission analyzers including chemiluminescent, nondispersive infrared, photometric, paramagnetic, ultraviolet and flame ionization detection principles.
